MONTREAL - While his former club celebrated a South American championship, midfielder Ignacio Piatti was getting his first look at his new team: the Montreal Impact. The long-awaited designated player from Argentina worked out with the Impact for the first time on Thursday, a day after his old club, San Lorenzo, pulled off a victory without him over Uruguayan side Nacional Asuncion in the Copa Libertadores final.Im very happy for San Lorenzo, but now Im thinking about the Impact, the 29-year-old said through an interpreter. Ill do everything I can to help this team.Piatti signed with Montreal on July 2, but the Impact agreed to let him stay for San Lorenzos climb through the final stages of the Copa Libertadores, the South American champions league. However, the sports governing body FIFA turned down his request to stay with Pope Franciss favourite team beyond the Aug. 8 close of the international transfer window. So Piatti played in the first leg of the final last week, but was not allowed to play in the return leg in Buenos Aires.Coach Frank Klopas confirmed that Piatti signed a three and a half year deal with the Impact. The midfielders skill and his ability to play on the left wing or in the middle will be welcome on a team that sits last in Major League Soccer at 3-14-5.But how much he can help this season remains to be seen. Newcomers to MLS tend to need a half-season to adjust to the travel and the physical style of play. Klopas called him a player the team can build around in the next few seasons. He will likely see some action in Montreals home game Saturday against the Chicago Fire and is ready to accompany the side to El Salvador next Wednesday for a CONCACAF Champions League game against CD FAS.I think the adaptation is not going to be a problem, said Piatti. I know the team is having a bad season. Im ready for the challenge.Piatti sent a chill through Impact fans hearts last week when he told an Argentine reporter he hoped eventually to play with an American MLS team like New York or Miami. On his arrival on Wednesday, he said his words had been taken out of context and that he was glad to be in Montreal.Having a new player from a winning program may help boost spirits on the Impact, who have lost seven league games in a row.Any time you bring in a quality player like that it lifts everybody on the team, said Klopas. You could sense a bit of that (at practice). But we have to understand its one player. Hell make us better, but our whole team has to lift our game a bit.The five-foot-11 Piatti, who speaks Spanish and Italian, had been on the Impacts radar for two years. An attacking midfielder, he played for St. Etienne in France and Lecce in Italy before returning to Argentina in 2012 with San Lorenzo, where he scored 12 goals in 54 matches.Just having him on the field with the ball, with his ability to beat players and put the opposing team under pressure, can help us a lot, said Klopas. Theres a period of adaptation for every player, but he brings a lot of quality and I think instantly hes going to add a lot to our team. His new teammates liked what they saw of Piatti in practice at Saputo Stadium. He played mostly on the left side during a scrimmage, in the position normally held by fellow Argentine Andres Romero. It would not be a surprise if Piatti subbed in for Romero, or vice versa, against the Fire.Im very happy hes finally here, said defender Hassoun Camara. Its been a long time that we were expecting him.But we know he doesnt have to be the hero. We dont have to put a lot of pressure on him. Hes here to help the team.He is the teams second DP along with 38-year-old striker Marco Di Vaio, who is expected to leave at the end of the season. Another DP, midfielder Hernan Bernardello, left last month to join Mexican club Cruz Azul.Di Vaio said hes looking forward to having a talented midfield player to help create offence. He said Piattis personality and confidence showed in the fact that he has taken No. 10, which is normally reserved for a teams offensive leader and best attacking midfielder.Everyone in Montreal has been waiting for a number 10, said Di Vaio. I hope he can do something big for us. Cheap Jerseys . Rodriguez, who has steadfastly denied using banned substances while with the New York Yankees, made the decision nearly four weeks after arbitrator Fredric Horowitz largely upheld the discipline issued last summer by baseball Commissioner Bud Selig. "I think its a good move for him," former Commissioner Fay Vincent said.Southern Illinois coach Barry Hinson regrets singling out one of his players in a postgame diatribe that has gone viral. And thats about it. After the Salukis 73-65 loss at Murray State on Tuesday night, Hinson called his players "uncoachable," "a bunch of mamas boys" and compared the disciplining of his young team to housebreaking a puppy. Hinson also called starting point guard Marcus Fillyaw "absolutely awful." "It was wrong of me to single out a specific player. I apologized to Marcus and team. I stand by the rest of my comments. Go Dawgs!" Hinson tweeted Wednesday ahead of a regularly scheduled news conference. Athletic director Mario Moccia did not immediately respond to messages from The Associated Press. Long known for being blunt, Hinson appeared calm at the start of his news conference after the Salukis (2-8) lost their fourth straight game. He became more wound up the longer he discussed a performance in which his team shot 42 per cent, committed 18 turnovers and were out-rebounded 40-29. "They wont let me coach them," Hinson said. "Any time I coach somebody they put their head down. Were soft. Weve been enabled for whatever reason. I got a bunch of mamas boys right now. And we just wont buck up and bow our necks, and weve got to get through that." Hinson added, "Im tired of coaching a guy and having him roll his eyes, or put his head down or feel sorry for himself. Im tired of that. This is big time. ... Weve got men and women serving our country. They dont get to take days off. Were going to college and getting it paid for." Several media outlets reported that senior centre Davante Drinkard later tweeted, "I cant believe the little man had the nerve to call us mamas boys. Smh. I guess this is where Our team learns to point the finger." The tweet was removved, according to media reports.dddddddddddd As of Wednesday afternoon, Drinkards Twitter account was allowing access only to confirmed followers. Fillyaw was scoreless with three fouls, two turnovers and one assist in 14 minutes. "Marcus was absolutely awful," Hinson said. "Thats about as PG-rated as I can say it. He was awful. Our guards were awful. Our three starting guards had one assist and seven turnovers. They must think its a tax credit. Its unbelievable how our starting guards played." Hinson added, "We made three turnovers tonight where we just came down and threw them the ball. I swear I thought one time that one of our players said, Merry Christmas." Hinson also blasted his big men, who combined to go 2 for 11. "My wife can score more than two buckets on 11 shots, because I know my wife will at least shot-fake one time," Hinson said, his voice rising. "But those guys arent listening. Theyre uncoachable right now." Hinson suggested that he will make a point of having his players do push-ups or run on a treadmill if they dont do as theyre told. "To me, when youve got a young team, its a lot like house training a puppy dog," Hinson said, rolling up a piece of paper and swatting the table in front of him. "You know what, when the dog does something wrong, Bad dog. Well, Im not going to hit em. Im not going to swat em. But, Bad dog, get on the treadmill. Thats probably what we need to do." Hinson, 52, is in his second season at Southern Illinois. He went 14-17 after inheriting a program hamstrung by academic problems and personnel issues. He had spent the previous four seasons in an administrative position with the Kansas basketball program. Before that, he had been head coach at Missouri State and Oral Roberts. Hes 221-165 in 13 seasons as a head coach. ' ' '
