ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Los Angeles Angels acquired outfielder Matt Joyce from the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday in exchange for right-handed reliever Kevin Jepsen. The Angels have big plans for Joyce, envisioning him as their primary designated hitter and possible No. 2 hitter, which would allow AL MVP Mike Trout to hit third in front of Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton. Joyces left-handed bat and playing experience at both corner outfield spots also should allow Hamilton to spend more games as a designated hitter. He gives us a lot of flexibility and makes us a deeper and more balanced team, Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said. We just felt like this was an opportunity for us to build a deeper and well-balanced lineup for 2015, and continue to move in such a way that we feel like were making the team better.Joyce batted .254 with nine homers and 52 RBIs last season, his seventh in the majors and sixth with Tampa Bay. The 2011 All-Star and Tampa native has 88 homers and 313 RBIs in his career, but knew he might be headed for a move from the retooling Rays.I was a little surprised that I went to the Angels, just because I think there were some teams they were talking about, but I dont think it couldve worked out any better for me personally, Joyce said. Im excited to come to a great city.Dipoto expects Joyce to supplant youngster C.J. Cron, who batted .256 with 11 homers and 37 RBIs while taking over late in his first major league season as the Angels regular designated hitter. The Angels are hoping a combination of several players will fill the offensive void left by Howie Kendrick, who was traded to the Dodgers for pitching prospect Andrew Heaney. The Angels gave up a key piece of their bullpen to acquire Joyce.Jepsen was the Angels seventh-inning specialist last season, his seventh with the club. He established career bests with 65 innings pitched, 75 strikeouts and a 2.63 ERA, making 65 scoreless appearances — third-most in the majors.Dipoto envisions Mike Morin, Cory Rasmus, Vinnie Pestano and Fernando Salas taking on Jepsens responsibilities in the Angels fairly deep bullpen.Jepsen was drafted by the then-Anaheim Angels in 2002, ranking alongside fellow draftee Erick Aybar as the longest-tenured Angels. Jepsen ranks fifth in franchise history with 315 appearances, becoming one of just four relievers to pitch at least seven seasons with the Angels.Joyce and Jepsen are both arbitration-eligible this winter. Joyce could hit free agency after the 2015 season, while Jepsen has another arbitration year left. Cheap Swingman Suns Jerseys . LA (SportsNetwork. Dan Majerle Jersey . No "best of" list we want any part of! The old Oilers jersey, the signature Gretzky Jofa helmet, and the attention to detail on his face all make this figure a "great one."The goaltender position is our personal favourite for the figures because we love the detail McFarlane puts in to the pads and masks. The Dominik Hasek figure is a specifically cool looking toy because hes been created in the typical stance Hasek always took before flopping and slithering around the crease.Next on the list is another goalie -- Patrick Roy himself. The positioning of Roy mid-save is really cool, along with the detail in his helmet design... although we wouldnt mind seeing a Montreal Canadiens version.Sergei Fedorov is known for his unique style of play with the Detroit Red Wings, but we tip our hats to the creative team making this toy for finding an excuse to paint the incredible Mighty Ducks of Anaheim jersey on this figure! Fedorov only played with the Mighty Ducks for two seasons, but this is magnificent. This next figure embodies everything that Alexander Ovechkin represents... just look at it!And to round out our best of, weve got Darryl Sittler rocking the old school Maple Leafs jersey with some great flow coming out the sides and back of his helmet. Hes even a beauty in action figure form! And now for the worst... the "why did you even make action figures of these players" list, starting with goaltender Dan Cloutier. In the thick of Cloutiers three impressive seasons in Vancouver, McFarlane toys decided to cash in on the goaltenders success... only to watch him fall out of favour with Canucks management after a series of injuries, a lack of playoff success, and a weak goal let in during a 2002 playoff game against the Detroit Red Wings that has seemed to define his career. We love Tie Domi, and think he is semi-deserving of an aaction figure, but this specific pose is unacceptable for a player of Domis likeness.dddddddddddd. First of all, hes skating. Second of all, his gloves are still on. And third, his fists arent in the air waiting to fight an opponent! McFarlane really dropped the ball on this one!We would have also accepted a figure of a fan falling into the penalty box with Domi, but we digress...The inconsistency of Andrew Raycroft is something Toronto Maple Leafs fans are familiar with, who is next on our worst hockey action figure list. We can see why the figurine was made, as Raycroft was an up and coming stud in the NHL, but his career never fully panned out as he floated from team to team before heading to Europe. We hate to keep picking on former Maple Leafs goaltenders, but the player who played side-by-side with Raycroft is the next action figure choice were pondering -- Vesa Toskala. All we really need to mention is Rob Davisons attempt to clear the puck out of his defensive zone and it bouncing over Toskalas glove and into the net to justify us putting this hockey action figure on our worst of list. Does that play deserve an action figure? We think not!Patrick Lalime was a fine starting goaltender who could be argued as a star, but Joe Nieuwendyk discovered Lalimes five-hole one faithful evening and unfortunately thats the entire reason he probably didnt deserve this action figure. Maybe its fitting hes just drinking water in the figurine. And finally, at one point we would have argued Jonathan Cheechoo fully deserved a figurine made of him, but after his 56 goal season in 2005-06 his production numbers began to fall drastically. Perhaps hell make a triumphant return and prove us wrong, but we arent going to bet the house on it.All the photos used in this post were taken from the McFarlane Sports Picks Hockey page.
